pesthouse

Contagion treatment facility

A pesthouse was a building where people with contagious diseases were isolated, especially during epidemics of plague, smallpox, or cholera.

The term is historical—such facilities were common from the 16th through 19th centuries before modern hospitals and quarantine systems developed: The ship's sick passengers were taken to the pesthouse on the island.
