visceral pleura
Lung's outer membrane
The visceral pleura is the thin membrane that directly covers the lungs, following every contour of the lobes and fissures.
It forms the inner layer of the two-layered pleural sac, with the outer parietal pleura lining the chest wall.
The fluid-filled space between them allows the lungs to expand and contract smoothly during breathing.
