half-light

Neither bright nor dark

Half-light is the dim, muted illumination found at dawn or dusk, when the sun sits just below the horizon and the world exists between full brightness and darkness.

It also describes any similarly subdued lighting—the glow filtering through curtains, the murky interior of a poorly lit room.

Writers often use half-light to evoke atmosphere, ambiguity, or transition: In the half-light of early morning, the familiar landscape looked strange and new.
