penny-farthing

Victorian big-wheeled cycle

A penny-farthing is an early type of bicycle with a very large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel, popular in the 1870s and 1880s.

The name comes from two British coins of vastly different sizes—the large penny and the tiny farthing—which the wheels resembled.

Riders sat high atop the front wheel and pedaled it directly, making the contraption fast but notoriously dangerous; a sudden stop could send the rider headfirst over the handlebars.
