pasteurized

Made safely drinkable

Pasteurized describes food or drink that has been heat-treated to kill harmful microorganisms.

The process, named for French scientist Louis Pasteur, extends shelf life and reduces disease risk.

Most commonly applied to milk and dairy products: pasteurized milk, pasteurized cheese.

Unpasteurized products are sometimes labeled "raw."
