passing gas

Releasing intestinal air

Passing gas is releasing intestinal gas through the anus—a euphemism for farting.

The phrase sounds clinical or polite, the kind of wording a parent might use with children or a doctor with patients: If you're passing gas, that's a good sign your digestion is working.

Also called breaking wind.
