paperbark

Flaky-barked Australian tree

Paperbark refers to trees with bark that peels in thin, paper-like layers, most commonly species of *Melaleuca* native to Australia and Southeast Asia.

The distinctive bark feels smooth and can be stripped in sheets.

Some North American birches are also called paperbarks for the same characteristic.

The term works as both noun and adjective: paperbark maple, a stand of paperbarks along the creek.
