paddle wheels
Steamboat side spinners
Paddle wheels are large wheels with flat boards (paddles) around their circumference, mounted on the sides or stern of a boat.
As the wheel rotates, the paddles push against the water to propel the vessel.
Paddle wheel steamboats dominated American river travel in the 19th century: The paddle wheel churned through the muddy Mississippi.
The design persists on tourist riverboats and in some industrial applications.
