Play higher trump
To overtrump is to play a higher trump card than one already played, beating an opponent who has already trumped.
The term comes from card games like bridge and whist, where trumping someone's trump requires holding a stronger card in the trump suit.
Figuratively, to overtrump is to outdo someone who has already made a strong move: She thought she had won the argument, but he overtrumped her with new evidence.
