visual overlay
Image layered atop
A visual overlay is a graphic element displayed on top of another image or video, adding information or decoration without replacing what's beneath.
Screen graphics showing scores during sports broadcasts, watermarks on photographs, and heads-up displays in video games are all visual overlays.
The term extends to any transparent or semi-transparent layer placed over a base image: The map had a visual overlay showing population density.
