overcasting

Seam edge wrapping

Overcasting is a sewing technique where thread wraps over a raw fabric edge to prevent fraying.

The stitches loop around the edge rather than passing through flat fabric.

In a different sense, overcasting describes the act of making the sky overcast—clouds spreading to cover it: The sky was overcasting as the storm approached.
