over-ear
Enclosing the ear
Over-ear describes headphones designed to fit around the entire ear rather than resting on or inside it.
The ear cups enclose the ears completely, typically providing better sound isolation and comfort for extended listening: I prefer over-ear headphones for long studio sessions.
Compare with on-ear and in-ear styles.
