oogenesis

Female gamete production

Oogenesis is the biological process by which egg cells develop in female animals.

It begins before birth in mammals, with cells arrested mid-development until puberty, when hormonal cycles trigger completion.

Unlike sperm production, which generates millions continuously, oogenesis typically matures only one egg per cycle: Oogenesis in humans takes years to complete.
