out-of-band

Not inline communication

Out-of-band describes communication or data transfer that happens through a separate channel from the main one.

In computing, out-of-band signaling uses a dedicated path distinct from regular data traffic: The server sent an out-of-band alert when the primary connection failed.

More broadly, it refers to any exchange that bypasses the expected channel: We handled the sensitive details out-of-band over a phone call rather than email.
