flagship university
State's top school
A flagship university is the most prominent public university in a state or region, typically the oldest, largest, or most prestigious institution in the state's public higher education system.
The term borrows from naval terminology, where the flagship carries the fleet commander.
Most U.S. states have one: She got into the flagship university but couldn't afford the out-of-state tuition.
Some states designate multiple flagships, diluting the distinction.
