obsessive compulsive disorder
Ritual-driven anxiety illness
Obsessive compulsive disorder is a mental health condition marked by intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or rituals (compulsions) performed to relieve anxiety.
Someone might compulsively check that doors are locked or wash their hands repeatedly.
Often abbreviated OCD, the term is loosely applied to any fastidious or perfectionistic behavior: I'm a little OCD about how the dishwasher gets loaded.
