wax seal

Molten stamp impression

A wax seal is a blob of melted wax pressed with an engraved stamp to create an embossed design, traditionally used to close letters and authenticate documents.

The seal showed the letter hadn't been opened and identified the sender.

Now largely decorative, wax seals appear on wedding invitations and formal stationery: She stamped each envelope with a wax seal bearing her initials.
