nutrias
South American rodents
Nutrias are large semiaquatic rodents native to South America, now widespread as invasive species in wetlands across North America and Europe.
They resemble beavers but have round tails rather than flat ones.
Nutrias were originally farmed for their fur, but escaped or released animals established wild populations that damage marshes and crops.
Also called coypu.
