number systems
Ways to quantify
Number systems are methods for representing and working with quantities.
The familiar decimal system uses ten digits (0-9), while binary uses only two (0 and 1), forming the basis of computing.
Other common systems include hexadecimal (base-16) and octal (base-8).
Ancient civilizations developed their own: Roman numerals, Mayan vigesimal (base-20), Babylonian sexagesimal (base-60).
The choice of base is arbitrary—what matters is consistent rules for expressing any quantity.
