no show

Unexpectedly empty seat

A no show is someone who fails to appear for a scheduled appointment, reservation, or event without giving advance notice.

Hotels, restaurants, and airlines track no shows because they represent lost revenue—a reserved seat or room that could have gone to someone else.

The term also works as an adjective: The restaurant charges a no show fee for missed reservations.

In employment contexts, repeatedly being a no show can get you fired.
