prelim

Opening round, shortened

Prelim is an informal shortening of preliminary, used as both noun and adjective.

As a noun, it typically refers to a preliminary examination, contest, or round that precedes the main event: She passed her prelims and can now start her dissertation research.

In boxing and other sports, prelims are the undercard fights before the main bout.

As an adjective, it means the same as preliminary: We got the prelim results back.
