overbooking

Too many tickets

Overbooking is the practice of accepting more reservations than available capacity, common among airlines and hotels that anticipate some no-shows.

When everyone actually appears, overbooking becomes a problem: The flight was delayed while they sorted out the overbooking situation.

The verb overbook works the same way: They overbooked the hotel by twelve rooms.
