night fighter
Nocturnal combat aircraft
A night fighter is a military aircraft designed or modified for combat operations in darkness, typically equipped with radar and specialized instruments for detecting and engaging enemy aircraft at night.
The term emerged during World War II when nocturnal bombing raids created demand for interceptors that could operate without daylight: Night fighters scrambled to meet the incoming bombers.
