national grid

Electrical transmission system

A national grid is a country's network of high-voltage power lines that distributes electricity from generating stations to local suppliers.

The term also refers to standardized coordinate systems used for mapping: The map reference uses the national grid.

In Britain, the National Grid is both the electricity transmission network and the company that operates it.
