circuit judge
Roving court official
A circuit judge is a judge who travels to hold court sessions in multiple locations within a judicial district or circuit, rather than sitting permanently in one courthouse.
The term dates from when judges literally rode circuits on horseback.
In modern usage, it often simply designates a judge serving at a particular level of the court system, regardless of whether travel is involved: The circuit judge heard arguments in the appeals case.
