mud season
Post-snowmelt messiness
Mud season is a period in late winter or early spring when frozen ground thaws, creating muddy conditions that make unpaved roads difficult or impassable.
The term is especially associated with rural New England and other northern regions where the freeze-thaw cycle turns dirt roads to muck: We lost a boot to mud season last year.
