mountain gorillas
African highland apes
Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of eastern gorilla found only in the volcanic mountains of central Africa, primarily in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
They are among the world's most endangered great apes, distinguished from lowland gorillas by their thicker fur, which helps them survive at high elevations.
Conservation efforts have slowly increased the mountain gorilla population.
