mother's line

Mom's family tree

Mother's line refers to ancestry traced through the mother—the maternal lineage as opposed to the father's line.

In genetics and genealogy, it often specifically means the mitochondrial DNA line, which passes exclusively from mother to child: Her mother's line goes back to Eastern Europe.

Also called the maternal line or matriline.
