monofilaments

Untwisted synthetic threads

Monofilaments are single strands of synthetic fiber, as opposed to threads made by twisting multiple filaments together.

Fishing line is the most familiar example—a monofilament line is one continuous strand of nylon or similar material.

The term also appears in medical contexts for sutures and in textiles for fabrics woven from single-strand fibers.
