monkfishes

Flat-headed sea predators

Monkfishes is the plural of monkfish, a bottom-dwelling fish with a large, flattened head and wide mouth.

The name may come from the hooded appearance of the head or from monks supposedly eating it during fasts.

Monkfish tail meat is firm and mild, sometimes called "poor man's lobster." The monkfishes in this morning's catch were unusually large.
