microhabitats

Small-scale living spaces

Microhabitats are small, localized environments within a larger ecosystem that have distinct conditions—temperature, moisture, light, or shelter—supporting particular organisms.

A rotting log, the underside of a rock, or a patch of moss each constitutes a microhabitat: The beetle thrives in the microhabitat created by fallen bark.

The term appears in ecology and biology to describe how species occupy narrow environmental niches.
