mercy rule
Lopsided game ender
A mercy rule is a provision in sports that ends a game early when one team has an insurmountable lead, sparing both sides the humiliation of playing out a foregone conclusion.
Common in youth leagues and amateur competitions: The game ended in the fifth inning under the mercy rule.
Also called a run rule or slaughter rule.
