mercies

Kindnesses freely given

Mercies is the plural of mercy—acts of compassion, forgiveness, or forbearance toward those in one's power.

The word often appears in religious contexts, where divine mercies are blessings or instances of God's compassion: His mercies are new every morning.

To be at the mercy of or left to the mercies of someone or something is to be vulnerable to their treatment, often with ironic implication that little mercy will be shown: abandoned to the tender mercies of the tax auditor.
