foul ball

Out of bounds

A foul ball in baseball is a batted ball that lands outside the lines extending from home plate through first and third bases.

Foul balls count as strikes for the first two strikes but cannot strike a batter out (except on a caught foul bunt).

The term extends to people who are disagreeable or untrustworthy: He turned out to be a real foul ball.
