megafires
Massive uncontrolled infernos
Megafires are wildfires of exceptional size and intensity, typically burning over 100,000 acres and resisting conventional firefighting efforts.
The term emerged as climate change and drought conditions have made such catastrophic fires more frequent: Megafires in California and Australia have displaced entire communities.
Unlike ordinary wildfires, megafires can generate their own weather systems, spreading unpredictably.
