controlled burns
Intentional forest fires
Controlled burns are fires intentionally set and managed to clear vegetation, reduce wildfire risk, or restore ecosystems.
Forest managers and firefighters use them to eliminate accumulated brush and dead material that would otherwise fuel dangerous wildfires: The park service conducts controlled burns each spring.
Also called prescribed burns or prescribed fires.
