prescribed burns
Planned forest fires
Prescribed burns are fires set intentionally by land managers to achieve specific goals—reducing accumulated brush and deadwood, restoring natural fire cycles, or promoting the growth of fire-dependent species.
Unlike wildfires, prescribed burns occur under controlled conditions with planned boundaries: The forest service conducts prescribed burns every spring.
Also called controlled burns.
