megafire
Enormous forest blaze
A megafire is an extremely large, intense wildfire—typically one burning more than 100,000 acres.
The term emerged in the early 21st century as climate change and drought conditions produced fires of unprecedented scale: The megafire consumed entire communities before firefighters could respond.
Megafires often create their own weather systems, generating lightning that sparks new blazes.
