emergency broadcast
Urgent public warning
An emergency broadcast is a message transmitted over radio, television, or other media to warn the public about imminent threats—severe weather, natural disasters, civil emergencies, or other dangers requiring immediate action.
In the U.S., the Emergency Broadcast System (now Emergency Alert System) interrupts regular programming with distinctive tones: This is a test of the emergency broadcast system.
