aerial firefighting
Sky-based flame combat
Aerial firefighting is the use of aircraft to combat wildfires, typically by dropping water or fire retardant from planes or helicopters.
Tanker aircraft release loads directly onto flames, while helicopters may dip buckets into lakes or reservoirs.
The technique allows access to terrain that ground crews cannot reach and can slow a fire's spread until other resources arrive.
