kick-start

Boot into action

Kick-start originally refers to starting a motorcycle by pushing down on a lever with the foot, as opposed to using an electric starter.

The figurative use now dominates: to kick-start something is to give it a sudden boost or impetus to get it going: The tax cuts were meant to kick-start the economy.

As a noun, a kick-start is any action that jolts something into motion: The project needed a kick-start.
