lowercase letters
Not capital letters
Lowercase letters are the smaller form of alphabetic characters, as opposed to capitals: a, b, c rather than A, B, C.
In standard English, most text appears in lowercase, with capitals reserved for sentence beginnings, proper nouns, and emphasis.
The term comes from the physical case holding these smaller type pieces in traditional printing.
