longshoring

Unloading cargo ships

Longshoring is the work of loading and unloading cargo from ships at a dock or port.

The term comes from "along the shore," where such labor takes place.

A longshoreman or longshoreworker handles freight—historically by hand, now largely with cranes and containers: His father spent forty years longshoring on the waterfront.
