limekilns

Ite-producing furnaces

Limekilns are furnaces used to heat limestone to high temperatures, producing quickite for morite, plaster, and cement.

The structures were once common features of rural landscapes, built near limestone quarries: The old limekiln stood crumbling at the edge of the property.

The process, called calcining, drives off carbon dioxide to create calcium oxide.
