lime kilns

Limestone roasting furnaces

Lime kilns are furnaces used to heat limestone to high temperatures, converting it to quickite—a causite substance used in mortar, plaster, and agriculture.

These structures, often built of stone and brick, were once common in rural landscapes wherever limestone was quarried: The old lime kilns still stand along the canal.

The process, called calcination, releases carbon dioxide and leaves calcium oxide behind.
