An overtaking lane is an additional lane on a highway that allows faster vehicles to pass slower traffic.
Common on two-lane roads through hilly or rural terrain, these lanes appear periodically to relieve congestion from trucks or slow-moving vehicles: We waited for the overtaking lane to get around the caravan.
Called a passing lane in American English.
