landship

Treaded war machine

A landship is a large armored fighting vehicle, an early term for what became known as a tank.

The word emerged during World War I when the British developed these machines in secrecy, calling them "landships" to suggest naval vessels adapted for ground warfare.

The term tank, originally a cover name to disguise the project, quickly displaced landship in common usage.
