laissez-passer

Official passage authorization

A laissez-passer is a travel document issued by a government or international organization, typically when a regular passport is unavailable or impractical.

The French literally means "let pass." It functions as a temporary or emergency passport: The embassy issued a laissez-passer so she could return home after her passport was stolen.

United Nations officials often travel on UN laissez-passers.
