kettling

Police encirclement tactic

Kettling is a crowd-control tactic in which police cordon off protesters or demonstrators, confining them to a limited area and preventing them from leaving.

The technique contains a crowd rather than dispersing it: Protesters were kettled for hours without access to food or bathrooms.

The term comes from the image of people trapped like water in a kettle.

Critics argue kettling violates civil liberties; police defend it as preventing violence and property damage.
