disbanding

Ending a group

Disbanding is the act of breaking up a group or organization so that it no longer exists as a unified entity.

When a band disbands, its members go their separate ways; when an army disbands, soldiers are released from service.

The word applies to any organized group—committees, teams, militias, clubs—that formally dissolves rather than simply becoming inactive.

The committee voted to disband after completing its investigation.
